RPE Fit Testing
Respiratory protective equipment quantitative and qualitative fit testing
Overview
RPE fit testing verifies that a respiratory protective device achieves an adequate seal on the individual wearer's face. Without fit testing, respiratory protection may provide as little as 10% of its rated protection factor due to facial seal leakage.
Quantitative fit testing (QNFT) uses particle counting instruments (PortaCount) to measure the ratio of ambient to in-mask particle concentration, providing a numerical fit factor. Qualitative fit testing (QLFT) uses taste or smell agents (saccharin, Bitrex) for pass/fail assessment of disposable respirators.
Fit testing is required under the WHS Code of Practice for Managing Risks of Hazardous Chemicals and the AS/NZS 1715 Respiratory Protective Devices selection, use, and maintenance standard. Annual retesting is recommended, with immediate retesting after dental work, weight change, or facial surgery.
