Heat Stress Assessment

WBGT measurement and thermal work limit assessment for hot environments

Overview

Heat stress assessment evaluates the thermal environment in hot workplaces using Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measurements, metabolic rate estimation, and clothing adjustment factors. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that can be fatal within minutes.

The assessment compares WBGT values against ISO 7243 screening criteria and the AIOH Thermal Work Limit (TWL) methodology, accounting for work rate, clothing, and acclimatisation status. Results determine safe work-rest regimes, hydration requirements, and alert/alarm trigger points.

Recommendations include engineering controls (ventilation, radiant heat shielding, air conditioning), administrative controls (work scheduling, job rotation, acclimatisation programmes), and physiological monitoring protocols for high-risk workers.
