Coal Dust Monitoring
Respirable coal dust exposure assessment in mining and handling operations
What Is Coal Dust Monitoring?
Coal dust monitoring measures respirable dust exposure in coal mining, handling, and processing operations. Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP or black lung) re-emerged in Queensland in 2015, prompting a national review of coal mine dust monitoring practices and regulatory enforcement.
The WES of 2 mg/m³ (respirable fraction, TWA-8h) applies nationally, with Queensland adopting 1.5 mg/m³ for underground coal mines. Monitoring must also assess the respirable crystalline silica component, as many coal seams contain quartz-bearing strata.
How Is It Done?
Personal sampling via cyclone and pre-weighed filter cassette. Gravimetric analysis for total respirable dust. Silica speciation by XRD (NIOSH 7500).
