What Is Ammonia Monitoring?
Ammonia monitoring measures worker exposure to this pungent, highly irritating gas used in industrial refrigeration systems, fertiliser manufacturing, chemical synthesis, and intensive animal farming. Ammonia is immediately dangerous to life at 300 ppm and causes severe respiratory and eye irritation at much lower concentrations.
The WES of 25 ppm TWA-8h and 35 ppm STEL remains unchanged under the WEL transition. Monitoring is particularly important in cold storage facilities, food processing plants, and fertiliser operations where catastrophic release scenarios also require emergency planning.
How Is It Done?
Personal sampling via treated sorbent tube or impinger. Analysis by ion chromatography or spectrophotometry. Real-time electrochemical or PID instruments for peak detection.
